The concept of healthspan was first introduced by gerontologists John Rowe and Robert Kahn in 1987. In their article published in Science, they highlighted the importance of not just extending life but ensuring those additional years are lived in good health. They stated: "A revolutionary increase in lifespan has already occurred. A corresponding increase in health span, the maintenance of full function as nearly as possible to the end of life, should be the next gerontological goal."1
